The Sangre de Cristo Mountains

Legend says the Sangre de Cristo Mountains were named after the reddish hues observed during sunrise and sunset, all the more alluring when covered with snow. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are the southernmost subrange of the Rocky Mountains, the largest mountain range in the United States.

Blanca Peak is the tallest at 14,345 feet and Colorado’s fourth highest, Mt. Lindsey stands at 14,042 feet, Little Bear is 14,037 feet and Trinchera Peak comes in at 13,517 feet. The elevation difference over a variety of terrains and habitats creates an extended and undisturbed ecological staircase with a host of flora and fauna at each step.

A Remarkable Conservation Corridor

Spanning approximately 90 miles, the Sangre de Cristo Conservation Corridor is one of the most unique and consolidated networks for protected lands under public and private ownership in the United States. Over 800,000 acres stretch from Great Sand Dunes National Park into New Mexico.
